kathy shamoun acupunturistI discovered Chinese Medicine quite by accident at nine years old. To teach us how to do research, my fourth grade teacher assigned a list of topics. Because I had no idea what the first word, "acupuncture," meant, I looked it up and there the love affair started.

The notion that each person has within him or herself the capacity to heal, was landing on the eyes of a girl who had already lived with chronic pain her whole life. I had already undergone two major surgeries in the hopes of removing, once and for all, the tumor that elicited that pain. And here was Chinese Medicine, offering a clear alternative to Western Medicine, which had failed to address my issues in any meaningful way.

I did not return to Chinese Medicine for more than a decade. In college I studied philosophy and psychology, because I was interested in Truth, the nature of life and the human condition.

After college I spent a few years trying my hand (legs rather) at another passion of mine, dance. Only then did I come back full-circle to Chinese Medicine.
While considering the various acupuncture schools I met my teacher, Jeffrey Yuen. Sitting in on his class as an observer, I got my first taste of the breadth and richness of this medicine. It was after I enrolled in the Swedish Institute in New York, where Jeffrey teaches and is dean of academic affairs, that I discovered he is a Taoist priest of two lineages (the 88th generation priest of the Jade Purity School and the 26th generation priest of the Complete Reality School) who is internationally recognized as a master of acupuncture, Classical Chinese Medicine, Taoism, Chinese herbology, Tai Chi Chuan and Qi Gong. At the Swedish Institute of Health Sciences I received my Masters of Science. To this day, I continue to deepen my intimacy with Classical Chinese Medicine as I commit an entire weekend a month in post-graduate studies with Jeffrey.

I practice Classical Chinese Medicine, which differs from its modernized practice known as "Traditional Chinese Medicine" (TCM). Classical Chinese Medicine integrates 74 meridians crucial to the treatment of conditions such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, psychological disorders, inherited diseases and issues of the spirit, which are omitted from TCM practice entirely.

I have been an invited speaker, holding workshops on topics such as oncology support, infertility, sexual dysfunction, menopause, facial rejuvenation, depression and anxiety, and natural birthing with the assistance of acupuncture.  I am always happy to share my experience, knowledge, and passion with a curious audience.

My patients come from all across Long Island and the greater New York City area including Manhattan, Huntington, Syosset, Oyster Bay, Woodbury, Lloyd Harbor, Centerport, Northport, East Norwich, Glen Cove, Bayville, Plainview, Manhasset, Garden City and Great Neck. Should you need directions, please don't hesitate to ask.
